The City of Cheyenne is located on the southeast corner of Wyoming and just a short drive from the Colorado border. The city is also Wyoming’s capital and the most populous city.
In 1867, General Grenville M. Dodge led a group of men across the prairie to trace the route for the Union Pacific Railroad. He named the city for the famous Native American nation of the Great Plains.
It began as a rough and tumble cowboy town with Civil War veterans and prospectors seeking gold headed north to South Dakota. It truly embodies the Old West.
Today, the city still has a small town Western feel while being one of the largest cities in Wyoming. It is considered the nation’s rodeo and railroad capital.
There are amazing historical sites, beautiful parks, historic hotels and mansions, a collection of steam engines, western-themed attractions, ranches, resorts, shopping and a rich and interesting history.
Cheyenne is a beautiful city and a country lover’s paradise. Since the state of Wyoming has the lowest population in the country it is also the quietest which makes it a great place to raise a family.
It is a very safe city. With the small population, there is a strong sense of community and very low crime rates. People are friendly and neighborly.
It is home to some beautiful parks like Lions Park. It has a beautiful beach, bike path, boat rentals, botanical garden, fishing, jogging trail, horseshoes, mini golf, picnic facilities, playgrounds, softball, swimming pool, and volleyball.
Curt Gowdy State Park and Vedauwoo Recreation Area is a breath-taking park located halfway between Cheyenne and the foothills of the Laramie Mountains. It covers 3, 552 acres and is known for its extensive trail system, fishing reservoirs, and Hynds Lodge, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The area also features granite towers, rocky soils and timber slopes. There are two small reservoirs in the center of Curt Gowdy State Park.
It is home to the Big Boy Steam Engine which is the world’s largest steam locomotive located in Holliday Park. Big Boy is one of only eight locomotives of its kind on display in the U.S.
Downtown has a real Western feel with the area’s many Western stores and museums. The Wrangler and Just Dandy are just a couple of the great shopping options. Wyoming Home is a shop that offers Western and Wyoming-themed home furnishing.
The city does have a growing nightlife for young people. It is home to great bars like The Outlaw Saloon, the Celtic Music Festival, which is the country’s largest outdoor rodeo and the Big Country Speedway.
There are a wide variety of restaurants, ranging from Asian cuisine to the famous buffalo burger.
Cheyenne Frontier Days also known as “The Daddy of ‘em All” is the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and Western celebration.
It began in 1897 and features 10 days of the world’s best PRCA rodeo, which includes bull riding and barrel racing, to steer wrestling and team roping. Frontier Days also includes concerts, chuck wagon cook-offs, carnival rides and shows, parades and much more.
